The Water Way is another proposal from the Dune Park conservation and management team. It gives the visitor large information. Specifically, this route goes around the Lagoon of Vixan, the small one.
The starting point is at O Vilar parking area, and by Campo de Amendo we head for the lagoon. We stop off for the first time beside a granite rock from which we can see a whole sight of the lagoon, the dune line and the prairies and fields around it.
Vixan lagoon was formed as a result of a fresh water mass gathered when dunes blocked up the Os Muiños river mouth to the sea. Several deposit layers reduced the lagoon size to its current look.
We check the dryness in the vegetated dune line when passing between the beach and the lagoon. This vegetation is adapted to the lack of water. Sandy soil impedes taking root. The wind also helps to fill the ground with little sediments that erode the land surface. Thats why we can find plants showing thorns or hairs, or they have root-attached bulbs that either avoid losing water or conserve the scarce amount they find.

Walking closer to the Vixan Lagoon, it is easy to notice how worthy is the habitat for aquatic life. Nutrients from rivers and filtrations afford a rich vegetation development; and this vegetation provides food and shelter for a diverse range of animals. Two parts can be clearly distinguished; the inner half is covered with a reed spot, and the northwestern half is taken up by a sea rush colony. Among all the aquatic birds, some of them stand out: kingfishers, herons, grand cormorant or swans. They visit the lagoon in coldest seasons.
At this point, we can learn some history by crossing the lagoon chanel to the Porto de Baixo (Downhill Quay) Iron-Age settlement. It is an old settlement by the sea, and some remains such as walls can be noticed, though they are hidden by sand. They date back to the fifth century B.C. and it was given its name because of a little pier placed at the north of the settlement.
From the settlement there are some possibilities: going on south to A Graña, a stretch full of rolled stones beaches, or skirting around the lagoon by the bird observatory side. The other choice is coming back and taking the main itinerary again.

On Campo de Amendo (Amendo Field) is clearly noticed the man trace; right here are the first farmed lands from surrounding villages. If we approach the villages, we watch folk buildings such as raised granaries, or the O Vilar restored mills. Two river mills, abandoned, were restored, and they became two great worth pieces of the Dune Park; as well as preserve the historical memory of our culture.
A path leads us from Os Muiños to varied crop lands of the village people, and so we reach the starting point again, ending up a 3 km journey that requires 2 hours minimum to be completed.
