City Hall Square

Riveira

The most historical square in the Riveira city centre, also populary called Alameda (Poplar Grove). Key place in social life, landscaped and with a emblematic palmer in the middle, its old name was Friar Field. More than 150 years ago there were meadows and orchards here. More than 150 years ago there were meadows and orchards here. A Franciscan who dropped oftenly by Riveira and strolled wandering and praying for those fields seems the guilt of that naming.

The Town Hall was built in this spot at the end of the 19th century. The square underwent several alterations: it was adorned with two spouts and steps at the beginning of the 20th century; used, by the way, as a fairground (Campo da Feira), before moving the travelling market to another place. In 1933 was called Praza da República (Republic Square), although before that it had been called Alfonso XIII Square. The appearance it shows today is the one that people from Riveira have known for the past 50 years.

 García Bayón Park
Riveira

Named after Carlos Garcia Bayon in his honour. He was the famous local official chronicler. The park was built in the beginning of 1987, in times of Mayor Ventoso Mariño. The area, former a sandy spot, is between the Padín fountain roundabout and the central zone of Riveira fish market. The starting Project, from the architect Julián Morenas Aydillo, has already changed its appearance. A channel that mouthed in a pool was removed for different fairground attractions, typical of children´s parks. It is 250 m. long and it displays a large recreation and playtime area, there are a tree-lined area and a pedestrian walk.

Moreover, this area stands out by its warm environment, cheery pavement cafés, etc. All that makes this park a great place for no end of activities along the year, including musical performances in holiday times.

Otero Goyanes Square

Riveira

Its popular name is Praza da Iglesia (Church Square); its present image is owed to a Luis Sarasquete Project, made during Ventoso Mariño´s term in office, in 1987. Parking spaces were removed to become pedestrian areas. The last alteration, in 2002, enlarged the stairs to the parish church´s doorway. The real name of the square pays tribute to the Marquis of Revilla, whose pazo (palace) is placed just in front of the church and its square.

Coroso Esplanade

Riveira

This very yearned for promenade came true in 1998, by means of Costas de Galicia (Galicia´s Coast). Along Coroso beach, it stretches along 2 km., with a tree-lined area and with a bike lane. The avenue, 4 m. wide, goes past several sanitary and educational institutions, and some snack-bars, quite crowded. If we take a walk through the promenade we can admire Coroso beach, all the Riveira front sea and a very vast zone of Ria Arousa.

Pedra Pateira Park

Riveira

Placed at the germ quarter of Riveira, Bandourrio, and by the sea shore, it displays a landscaped area to walk by, sit down or play – there are a children´s playground and a basketball court. Citizens can also refresh themselves in a drinking water fountain and admire the monuments decorating this green area: the Dorna monument and the Armada tribute – a big anchor. The project for the Park was conceived in the Technical Council Office and undertaken in 1991. A gorgeous fountain takes up the centre of the Park, which embellishes the town in its way out towards Castiñeiras parish.

San Roque Park

 Corrubedo

It all started in 1995. It was then when this stunning site began to be shaped, mixing nature, tribute to our cultural legacy, leisure and work. The park is located at the Riveira city centre boundary, and its area is about 175000 square metres. It can be reached from the middle of the town by foot; there are some different ways. By road, it is 500 m. away from the Xarás roundabout where Via Rápida (Highway) ends. Since 2000, the establishment of the school-workshop "Illa de Sagres" –some work-formative courses provided by the council- has pushed definitely the park to turn into a multidisciplinary area with a very present cultural theme. The area has been given a little celtic settlement replica, a palloza (traditional mountain home), petroglifos over big stones and a dolmen, revising the local tourist and historic points. The school-workshop has also built a greenhouse and a store; there is ongoing labour to decorate the development.

The park has toilets, café, a view point with ria Arousa sceneries, and a recreation and picnic area, with tables and benches and a stone hut fit for great barbecues. There are many interesting places nearby, making the park a fit spot: San Roque chapel or an old washing place just 100 m. away from the area boundary. 1.5 km away is found the Pedra da Rá viewpoint, in the Monte da Cidá (City Mount).
