MONUMENTS

Housewife Monument

Riveira

The importance the Housewives Association has in the town entailed a plan that become the elegant stone statue dominating the Plaza da Concordia (Concord Square). In the centre of the roundabout at the entrance of the fish market area; a circle of grass, landscaped with leafy bushes, holds this monument. It consists of a standing woman in waiting pose, her back leaned against a side of the frame over her.
It is a memorial for all women who in the past, present and future live through tense moments waiting for her partner, absent for working reasons, or clearer and generally in Riveira, because of the sea.

Dorna Monument

Riveira

A dorna is a vessel closely linked to the progress of Riveira city since its humble sailor origin; that is why it deserves a tribute like the one given by Pedra Pateira Park, beside the circle fountain in the middle of the place. A full-size stone copy of a dorna underlines the importance of the park since this memorial was inaugurated.

Emigrant Monument

Palmeira

This sculpture was erected on the top of O Castelo Rock, by the Palmeira parish quay. There are some steps leading to a terrace, over the rocks, where this beautiful stone memorial stands. It was inaugurated in 1998. Three human figures represent a bittersweet family scene: the man pointing at far land and looking at his wife, who try to glimpse the future horizont, while the child strains to climb the pedestal trying to reach his father, of whom it will only stay his absence for a long time.

Siren Monument

 Riveira

Original statue placed at the centre of the roundabout in 9 Agosto Street, in St. Eugenia Riveira. It welcomes pedestrians and vehicles coming down from Cubeliños or Fafián to the city centre. This kind of stone guardian also watches over the way into Rosalia Castro Street from the top of a stone tower 3 m. high. The sculpted bare woman figure throwing her legs round a willowy long-tailed dolphin symbolizes the joining between marine animal and female: a siren. The presence of this mythological being in Riveira goes back to certain legends. The new statue erected in Santa Eugenia in 2003 means, moreover, a self-reference to the other siren in the borough, the one that, warm and majestic, receives the visitors in the pier of the Salvora island.
