Buildings to visit
| Auditorium Hall |
Riveira |
|
The Auditorium hall was inaugurated in 1999, and became the new Culture House, holding Sport, Culture and Youth council departments. The old public market was used and rebuilt to become a brand new innovated hall where the past and the modern were united. This decision solved the lack of a large hall for events; the new auditorium has 280 comfortable seats. The upper floor, formerly taken up by market stalls, was fit out to be exhibition hall and museum. There is a ramp to access; it was there before the remodeling but it seems now an avant-garde element as a part of the inner space arrangement. |

| Corrubedo Lighthouse |
Corrubedo |
|
The Corrubedo Lighthouse building was ended in 1853, drawn by the engineer Celedonio Uribe, responsible for numerous works and urban alterations carried out in Riveira during the second half of 19th century. At a privileged placement, it is always witness of the ferocity of an irate sea and thousands of diverse sunsets. In 1856 it began to work as a guide for ships. Firstly it was oil what was used as fuel for illumination; later crude oil, and electric current for about 35 years. Arrival of electricity turned the lighthouse uninhabited, the same as many other along the coastline, now centralized at certain points such as Vilagarcía.
There is a funny story about such a time when the beams of light were red instead of white. Because of a general feeling of discomfort sprung up after the ocean liner Santa Isabel wreckage by Salvora, some speculations pointed to the confusion between the two lighthouse beams as the cause of the accident. So, that red light gave Corrubedo lighthouse a nickname: the comunist lighthouse, which still remained after setting the white light again.
